Experiencing Sustainable Cultural Tourism: Day 4 of KUL Mobility in Slovenia

The fourth day of the KUL project’s international mobility for participants in the Sustainable Cultural Tourism sector was once again filled with meaningful experiences that blended cultural heritage, contemporary creativity, and sustainable entrepreneurial insight.

Our hosts, the Development Centre Murska Sobota, continue to provide an exceptional programme in the heart of Slovenia’s Pomurje region. On this day, participants explored two highlights of local cultural and entrepreneurial innovation.

🌿 Posestvo Mala Rosa: Sustainable Business and Local Identity

The morning began with a visit to Posestvo Mala Rosa, a charming and ecologically conscious estate situated in the village of Stanjevci. Participants had the opportunity to engage in a workshop facilitated by representatives of Biseri Pomurja (Jewels of Pomurje) – a network that connects local businesses and initiatives focused on promoting the cultural and natural richness of the region.

The workshop focused on how to develop sustainable and culturally grounded business models in rural tourism. Participants exchanged ideas about the importance of storytelling in tourism, building partnerships with local artisans and producers, and preserving authenticity while developing market visibility. The experience highlighted how local identity can be transformed into an economic and social asset when nurtured through community cooperation and environmentally friendly practices.

🎨 Murska Sobota Gallery: Art as a Reflection of the Region

In the afternoon, the group visited the Murska Sobota Gallery, the central gallery for contemporary visual arts in the Pomurje region. This cultural institution plays a vital role in promoting Slovenian and international art, often with a strong connection to regional identity.

Participants were welcomed with an inspiring exhibition by Maruša Štibelj, a contemporary artist whose work explores themes of symbolism, selfhood, and social commentary. The exhibition sparked thoughtful dialogue among the visitors, drawing connections between modern art, place-based narratives, and the evolving role of cultural institutions in tourism and education.

Bridging Tradition and Innovation

As the KUL mobility programme progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that sustainable cultural tourism is not just about preserving the past — it’s also about shaping the future. Whether through hands-on workshops or engaging with local art, the participants are gaining insight into how cultural heritage can be reimagined in ways that are inclusive, innovative, and sustainable.

Stay tuned for more updates from Slovenia as our mobility continues to inspire and connect people across borders and sectors.
